How To Write a Funeral Order of Service

How to Write a Funeral Service Program

Whether a funeral arrangement is going the traditional route or is planned to be more on the unconventional side, it will be important for those attending to know what and when key parts of the service are happening. This is where a funeral order of service comes in.

The funeral service program contains all the important information for guests attending the services. Typically, in a booklet form, this document shows the order in which the events will be taking place. The list below shows how an order of service would usually outline the service.
  • Introduction/Welcoming Words
  • Prayers or Opening Readyings
  • Music Selection/Hymns
  • Formal Readings including the Obituary
  • Moment of Silence
  • Eulogy or Life Tribute
  • Informal Tributes
  • Thank you and Acknowledgements
  • Viewing of the Deceased
  • Closing

It is common to include the name of the person conducting each section of the service so people are able to understand who the person they are listening to is and who they meant to the deceased. It is also common to include the musical selections or other details about any scriptures or poems being read for people to know as well.

The front page of a service program can be as informal or formal as you would like. The main information to have on the front page of an order of service would be the deceased’s full name, their date of birth, date of death, the date of the service being outlined, and a photo of them. Beyond the basic information, the first page can be designed or use colors that you feel would best represent the deceased and what they would like.

If you are planning an arrangement with a pastor or funeral director, they will be able to work with you on making sure you are able to include the key points and any other information you would like for the people attending the services to know as well.
