Obituary for Byron Alexander "Potsy" Watts

Byron Alexander “Potsy” Watts, age 83, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. Potsy was born on June 12, 1938 in Luling, TX to Vergil and Betty Mae Watts. He grew up in Wattsville and attended school in Luling. He married his wife, Joyce Cheatham February 12, 1965. They spent some time away from Luling, but found their way back to Luling when their children were older.

Never a stranger, always a friend. Potsy was well loved in the community. He was a kind and quiet man known for his “Watts knot” on his temple and coveralls. His pockets were always full of his necessities: tobacco, a small notebook & fountain pen, and that beat up, old brown billfold full of handwritten notes & phone numbers, business cards and the grandkids’ two dollar bills. He was an avid Western watcher and would say “that ol’ rascal is up to no good” even though he had watched that scene 100 times.

Potsy never shied away from hard work or long hours. A heavy machine operator by trade, he spent countless days running equipment, building locations, and clearing brush. He split his year between being an equipment operator and farming & produce sales. His signature pat on the bottom side of a Black Diamond was all the guarantee his customers needed to know they were getting the best melon around. He took great pride in packing the best basket of “maters” in town and that he never sold any junk.

Being a Daddy & PawPaw was his most prized role. He lit up when he played with any of his youngins. He may have told you he didn’t want to hold that one until it got a little bigger, but once that baby was in his arms, he was not giving it up. He was a storyteller and jokester with anyone that would sit and listen a while. One of his favorite stories to tell the kids was how he lost part of his finger, was it the pet tiger or snake story that he shared with you? He loved attending the kids’ ball games, especially baseball and softball. He loved family celebrations when everyone would get together and was always willing to help Mama, especially when it came time for cutting up all the vegetables to make the dressing.

Potsy was preceded in death by his Parents, Vergil & Betty Watts; Son, Robert Wayne Cox-Watts; Brothers, Butch, Johnny Ray, Vergil, and Jackie; and Grandson, Wesley.

Potsy is survived by his loving wife Joyce and their four children: Judy Thomason & husband Bobby, Sissy Tucker & husband Pat, Debbie Collins & husband Brandon, and Allen Watts & wife Kara all from Luling.
