Obituary for Derek Phil Collins

Derek Phil Collins, 51 of Luling, Texas joined the Lord after passing away on February 5, 2021. Derek was born on August 23, 1969 in Cuero, Texas to his parents Danny Collins and Joy Gyllenband. He was baptized on November 9, 1969 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Yorktown, Texas. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Luling, Texas. He graduated from Luling High School in 1988.
He worked as a directional driller for Strata Energy, Nevis Energy, and Down Hole Directional Services. More recently he also was employed as a pumper, first with M&J Production Company, and at the time of his death for Shiloh Oil Company. Derek was a talented and creative welder, building beautiful gates, cattle pens and many other things. He was gifted with all things mechanical using his spare time to repair automobiles, tractors, lawn mowers, etc.
The best statement of his character is shown by the quantity and quality of his friendships. He would give you the shirt off his back and would stop what he was doing to help a friend in need. He loved and was loved by his family and friends. His greatest joy in life was being a Dad to his son Dalton.
He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents B.J. and Wilma Collins, and Oscar and Lillie Rau, and his brother-in-law Howard Stine.
He is survived by his son Dalton Phil Collins, former-wife Chrissy Collins, his mother and step-father Joy and Mike Gyllenband, his step-mother Kathelean Collins, his sister Kimberley Stine, his brother Ryan Gyllenband and wife Megan, his nieces Alisha Soto and husband Ryan, and Ashley Mercer, his nephews Kraig Mercer and wife Sarah, and Graham Gyllenband, great-nieces Kaydence Mercer, Payton Trigo, and Riverlyn Soto, and great-nephew Collin Trigo.
Serving as pallbearers are:
Kraig Mercer, Bucky Floyd, Boyd Catching, Keith Pullin, Aubrey Soefje, Dean Huff, Chad Watts, and Jeffrey Gonzales

Honorary pallbearers are:
Ryan Gyllenband, Wayne Stevens, Bronc Roberts, Shane Stevens, Brian Larison, alan Mercer, and Bryce Grogan.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday February 10, at O’Bannon Funeral Home
Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday February 11th at the Collins Family Cemetery, 20297 State Hwy 80N., Gonzales, TX. with Rev. Glenn Moore Officiating.
