Obituary for Doris Ann Johnston (Graham)

Doris Ann Johnston (Graham) of Luling, TX was called home to the Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 27, surrounded by family, at the age of 91. She passed away peacefully in the comfort of Amazing Grace in Corpus Christi, TX.

Born in Luling on Aug. 12, 1932, to Hubbard and Eleanor Graham. She attended local schools and graduated from Luling High School in 1950. It was there that she met the love of her life, Reginald “Reggie” Lee Johnston, Jr. After graduation, she attended Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College (now Texas State University) in San Marcos. Upon completing her degree, she and Reggie (a then Air Force pilot) married in 1954 and off they went; with tours in France, Germany and Japan before returning to Texas where they settled in Corpus Christi. Along the way, they raised four daughters and were married for 52 years until his death in 2006.

In Corpus Christi, Doris was a dedicated schoolteacher, serving as a fifth-grade teacher at Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic School for 30 years. An avid reader, crossword and wordsearch enthusiast, she would swap books with her family and friends, often re-reading books because she couldn’t keep track of what she had read. Doris was also a fan of soap operas and watching QVC and the Home Shopping Network, snagging many a great deal in her day! She was also generous, donating to nonprofit organizations locally and abroad. Upon her death, she was a parishioner at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church.

Doris leaves behind her four daughters, Mildred “Millie” Hernandez of San Antonio, Carol Johnston of Houston, Sandra “Sandy” Sanchez (David) of Corpus Christi and Dana Jaramillo (Tommy) of Elyria, Ohio. She was also a proud Granny and Gigi to 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Gracie, who stayed with her until the end.

Besides her husband, Doris was predeceased by her parents, sister Patricia “Pat” Blackmar (Graham), sister-in-law Loudie Bell Johnson (Johnston), great-niece Jacy Swann (Johnson) and son-in-law Edward “Eddie” Hernandez.

Doris’ family would like to thank the many friends and family who came to visit her during her time in hospice, and especially the staff at Amazing Grace and Nurse Sarah from Opus for their loving care and comfort during her last year of life.
