Obituary for Evelyn Jewell Wells (Ellison)

Evelyn Jewell Wells, born September 11, 1931 in Luling, Texas, to Alton Ellison and Vera Huber Ellison, passed away peacefully at Magnolia Living and Rehabilitation on February 15, 2024, after being treated in Kyle, Texas, at Ascension Seton Hospital Intensive Care Unit for pneumonia and heart valve issues.

Jewell attended the Luling Public Schools and was a member of the Luling Church of Christ. In high school, she was an elected Class Favorite.

A collector of movie memorabilia as a teen, her life-long favorite actor was John Wayne. She especially liked the movie “The Sands of Iwo Jima” starring John Wayne and in 1960 visited the Brackenridge, Texas, Alamo Village set of “The Alamo” starring John Wayne, Richard Widmark, and Laurence Harvey.

Jewell also loved country-western music, traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri, admiring George Strait, meeting Mickey Gilley, and getting hugs from Mel Tillis and other performers.

Jewell married Ross Wells, Sr., of Lockhart, Texas, who rode bulls in the rodeo, served in the U.S. Marine Corps, and worked as Southern Pacific Railroad Wreck Removal Supervisor for Pat Baker Co. of Kingsbury.

Career-wise, Jewell worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell, as an office manager for Central Power and Light Co. in Luling, and as a volunteer for Edgar B. Davis Hospital in Luling.

Her son, Ross “Chuck” Wells, graduated from Luling High School, received a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, served as Director of Community Education in Lockhart I.S.D. and Director of Public Relations at Keystone School in San Antonio, and directed feature-length independent films “Let’s Scare Rachel to Death” and “To the Yonder Revisited.”

She had two grandchildren: Terence Ross of Leonard, Texas, and Chelsea of Tucson, Arizona.

Likewise, she had two great-grandchildren: Allison of Dallas and Ross William of Leonard.

She now joins loved ones who have likewise passed: her father Alton Ellison, her mother Vera Ellison, sister Dodie Ethridge, brother Buddy Ellison, husband Ross Wells, brother-in-law Jack Ethridge, sister-in-law Patsy Ellison, nephew Clay Ellison; and friends Eunice Youngblood and Lillian Clary.

Jewell will now reside in the Luling City Cemetery among family members.
