Jesse Ybarra Mendez, age 73, passed peacefully into eternity on Saturday December 26th, at his residence in Luling, Texas surrounded by his family.
Jesse was born on January 11, 1947 in Fentress, Texas to Juan and Juanita Mendez. He was raised and attended school in Luling, Texas. He joined the Army in 1966 as a Field Artilleryman. He proudly served in Vietnam and continued his service at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His medals include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Bar and he was a Purple Heart recipient. After his military service he pursued a career in the Oil Field.
Jesse was well known throughout the surrounding areas. He often joked that he was the Mayor of Luling because everywhere he went in town people would come to greet “Chuy Mendez” as most people knew him. He was known for his sense of humor, unfiltered opinions, and his willingness to help others. He had the most interesting and unique stories to share. He was a free spirit who lived his life to the fullest. His enjoyment for life was only surmounted by his love for his children and grandchildren, whom he left with so many wonderful memories.
Jesse is survived by his wife Linda Spain of Luling, TX, his children Cynthia Zuniga (James) of Seguin, TX, Joshua Mendez (Amanda) of Clarksville, TN, his grandchildren Fabian Fonseca Jr. (Carissa) of Seguin, TX, Amber Fonseca Trevino (Adam) of Seguin, TX, Brooke Mendez, Maddison Mendez, and seven great grandchildren; his siblings; Antonio Mendez (Julie) of Lockhart, TX. Gloria Malaer of Luling, TX, Juan Mendez (Rosie) of Lockhart, TX, and Mary Saavedra (Keno) of Carrollton, TX along with many other loving relatives and numerous friends.
Due to current CDC, State and local mandates, protective measures regarding social distancing, limited attendance capacity, and use of personal protective masks will be required for the visitation, chapel service and graveside burial rite. Services are under the care and direction of O'Bannon Funeral Home.
