Obituary for Kenneth Ray "Ken" Kent

Kenneth Ray Kent

On a beautiful morning, “April Fools Day” April 1, 1933, a 3rd son was born to Julius Webster and Mode Viola Kent. His name was Kenneth Ray Kent and he was born in Goldthwaite, Texas. Ken was a member of the McNeil Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

His dad worked for Sinclair Oil, so growing up his family always bounced around from town to town. Their longest stay would be in Olney, Texas. Ken spent his high school years in St. Joe, Texas, where he exceled in all sports. With the help of scholarships over a few years, he was able to really focus in on football and baseball. After high school, the US Navy took two years of his time, where he was aboard the US Princeton Navy ship. But two years was long enough for Ken, and he found his way back home to work in the oil business.

After returning home, Ken met Dorothy Eileen. They went on to marry in 1957, and he was very fortunate to gain and help raise a 4-year old daughter named Tanka Kay.

In 1961, Ken attend the DPS School and became a highway patrolman. After a few years of that, he decided to take on the field of a customs agent for the government. He worked in several cities until his retirement, at the age of 52.

With retirement, came lots of free time to do things Ken enjoyed, especially deer hunting. He got back into team roping and started traveling. Eileen and Ken accomplished visiting all 50 states, including Alaska. He loved to visit the Big Bend country and Alpine, Texas, and spent a lot of time vacationing there.

From the time Ken was 2 years old, he was usually found running around with his cowboy boots and hat. He loved to tell you how he never owned a pair of regular shoes, only his boots. Throughout his childhood and growing up, he worked on quite a few ranches. Therefore, it is no surprise that he owned and rode horses throughout his entire life. His love for cowboying convinced him to build a roping arena behind his home, where an abundance of team roping events were held. Ken won many belt buckles within his team roping career. As time went on, he decided to change up his style. He went from riding on a horse to riding on a motorcycle.

In 2009, Ken lost his wife, Eileen, of 52 years. A few years later, he met his soon to be second wife, Myrtle Ann Hinton. They married in Luling, Texas on November 19, 2021. Together, they enjoyed their golden years with lots of traveling and making new friends, card games, spending time with their church family, and watching all sports games. His favorites sports games were those he could attend of his great-grandsons’ football games.

Ken also loved country music, and going to listen to it and the Friday-Night Music Club.

Every Monday morning, at 6:00 AM, for the past 30 years, Ken would meet his coffee club friends in Martindale. They spent a lot of time together, specifically hospital stays in order to support and be there for one another.

In May of 2021, Ken and Ann left their country home and moved to the town of Luling, Texas. Ken enjoyed living in town, because he could sit on his front porch all day and wave to his friends passing by.

Ken was survived by his wife, Myrtle Ann Hinton Kent, daughters Tanka Hawkins, Glenda Bohac and husband Johnnie, Hope Curlee and husband Larry, son, Rick Hinton, aunt, Athalia Jones, grandchildren, Brent Ray Hawkins, Shane Hinton and wife D’Ann, Roxane Hinton , Zach Salih and wife Kristi, Jonathan Curlee, Caleb Curlee, Katie Hulland Shawn, Ron Collins, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, past-wife, brothers, Dub JW Kent and Herman Kent.
