Obituary for Kent Raegan Metzler

Kent Raegan Metzler
November 18, 1952-October 14, 2022

Kent passed away on October the 14th peacefully at his home after a year long battle with cancer.
Kent was born in Bellville, Texas on November 18, 1952 to parents Jack Curtis Metzler and Faye Bookman Metzler. The family moved to Luling in 1959. Kent graduated from Luling High School in 1971, then attended Texas A&I in Kingsville for a short time and graduated from TSTI in Waco for welding.
One of Kent’s proud accomplishments was his family. Kent and Debbie were friends in school, started dating in 1973, and they married March 13, 1982. In 1983 they welcomed their first child, son Frank, and in 1987 welcomed their daughter Stacy. Kent was so proud of his children and their accomplishments, especially having Texas A&M University graduates. In 2010 Frank and Mindi blessed Kent and Debbie with their first grandchild Bryce, then Ainsley in 2012, and Embry in 2014. He loved creating an interest in ranching, farming and the outdoors for the grandchildren.
Kent’s career of working on offshore oil rigs, for months at a time, made him a world traveler. He worked in the Middle East, North Sea, Africa, Brazil, Mexico & multiple other countries. After 9/11 Kent gave up a career international work and came home to focus on his love of ranching. Over the years, Kent & Debbie expanded their ranching operation and cattle herd.
A little known hobby of Kent’s was the Texas Water Safari (TWS). Once the safari bug bit, he was hooked. He was a 6 time finisher, a TWS Volunteer, and longtime member of the Texas Water Safari community. More recently, Kent was known for setting up the unofficial checkpoint at Stairtown and also the pavilion at Wooden Bridge. A five time Standard Class Winner: with 1987-partner Rod Ellis, 1988-partner Johnny McCrary, 1989-partner Rod Ellis, 1991-partner Monte Weddell, 1992-partner Henry Patterson & 2004-partner Frank Metzler.
Kent loved his family, friends, pets & community. He was a simpe man and lived a simple life. He prefered being outside and manual labor. He never met a stranger, would always see the best in people and always wanted to help others. He loved having friends around with good cold beer. He loved a good time, dancing, and great stories. He was a “founder and director” of the Luling Safety Meeting. He also looked forward to his yearly West Texas trip to visit his brother’s grave and friends in Marfa, Tx.
Kent is survived by his wife of 40 years Debbie, Dr. Frank and wife Dr. Mindi Metzler, grandchildren Bryce, Ainsley and Embry of Austin; daughter Stacy and fiancee Chase Cappleman of Luling. Brother/Sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Clary of Universal City and their daughter Brenda Vanacek and son Adam Clary and their families; Sister-in-law Marlene Metzler and her sons Curt Metzler and Mark Metzler and their families; numerous great nieces, great nephews and cousins. We can’t forget his beloved pets (his girls): Dogs- Libby, Lucy, Mollie and Gus, cats- Darlin & barn cat Peaches. He was preceded in death by his brother, Curt Metzler, and his parents.
Services will be held at Central Baptist Church in Luling at 10am with Pastor Allen Davis. Graveside will be at Luling City Cemetery.
