Madeleine Teaff Manford was the third of four children born to Elyn Johnson Teaff and Jimmie D. Teaff on April 25th, 1928 in Hutto, Texas. Madeleine had an extraordinary commitment to lifelong learning. Over the years, she had taken classes in a wide array of subjects including business and economics. After graduating from Taylor High School a month after her sixteenth birthday in 1944, she immediately enrolled in Nixon Clay Commercial College in Austin, completing her executive secretarial curriculum in May 1945, leading to her first job with Travis. After her marriage to Travis in 1947, Madeleine moved to Luling where she spent the rest of her life. Somewhere along the way, she decided it was time to pursue a college degree. After starting college in 1962, being inducted into four honor societies in English, history, social studies, and education, Madeleine was elected a member of Alpha Chi. She completed her bachelor’s degree in 1966 and began teaching English and History at Luling Jr./High school. She completed her MA degree in 1971. She retired in 1991, but did not stop her educational pursuits. She joined UT – Austin’s LAMP, a continuing education program and Friends of the LBJ Library Lecture Series. She was also involved in her community and her church. Her commitment to learning was made more apparent by her love of travel. She spent a semester teaching oral English at a Chinese high school in the city of Dalian and traveled at every opportunity while in China. Another exciting trip was to India and Bhutan which is located in the Himalayan Mountains. But, perhaps her most adventurous trip was a teaching experience in the small village of Senchi Ferry Ghana, Africa. One of her favorite destinations were her many trips to Mexico. Most enjoyable were the “girl trips” there with her nieces.
Madeleine was committed to living a life that mattered. She created the Madeleine Teaff Manford Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit a Taylor and a Luling High School graduate who attends Texas State University in San Marcos, this to give back for the many blessings of her life and her education.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Wallace and Jimmie, a sister Kathleen, an infant son, and husbands Travis Manford, Knox Manford. She is survived by her husband Stan Reece, nephews Wallace Teaff, Jr., Robert Teaff, Ron Teaff, and Bill Teaff. Also nieces Phyllis Boles, Cynthia Allen, Eva Henry, and numerous great nieces and nephews.

I had the honor of being in Mrs. Manford's 8th grade History class. She was was an much so, that I thought of pursuing a career in teaching. History became my favorite subject. I remember her poise, her perfect posture, her beauty, her grace, and her beautiful speaking voice. I was so glad to see her at our 40th class reunion. That was the last time I saw her. My condolences to the family and may she rest in peace.
