Obituary for Margie Mae Patton (Springs)

Margie Mae Patton. Born July 5th, 1926 on a farm near Seguin, Guadalupe Co, Texas. Her father
William Henry Springs, a sharecropper with her mother Effie Preece Springs farmed from south Guadalupe Co to near Prairie Lea, in Caldwell County. Mama spent her early years working on these tenant farms with her brothers and sister. She attended Kingsbury and Prairie Lea schools till 12th grade but had to leave early to help with the farm work. She often talked about picking cotton, sleeping in the trees, going to the river, to the Fentress resort skating rink and walking miles to school which she did. Mama lived various places in her life, finally moving to Prairie Lea with her family in 1962.Mama taught herself how to Upholster and refinish furniture and she became very proficient at it, turning it into a 20+ year career. Later with her husband and sons she helped run our Oilfield Service and Oilfield Production companies until we sold out and she retired.Mama loved to travel, loved to visit with friends and family until she got tired of us we all
remember well all the parties and gatherings for the Holidays. I remember around Christmas one year after a party we all went to Pepper Tree in Seguin. She got up and knocked over the Christmas tree, ornaments went everywhere, her and Charlie stood it up, redecorated it and she said “Hell, looks better now”!
Margie married Odie Caddell in 1946 and had 4 sons: Charles Odie Caddell “Charlie”, James
Caddell, William Martin Caddell “Billy”, and Donald Wayne Caddell “Donnie”. She married
Loyd Gerald Patton in 1958 and had 2 more sons: Brett Lee Patton and Mark Galen Patton.
We could not have been blessed with a better mother, she wasn't particularly affectionate but we all knew that she loved us. Mama was very tolerant of all the troubles 5 sons can create, and we did create our share, but she never treated us bad or talked to us ugly in any way. Besides her sons, their friends, girlfriends, and adopted sons she spent many hours caring for others. She welcomed any and all into our home, especially our friends if they wanted or needed to stay overnight or longer. I never knew a time if we needed something that if she could she would see that we were taken care of. One time I went to her and said “moma I have a problem” she said “ whose problem is it “ I said “mine” she said “then you fix it”. We all really appreciated that she let us make our own way and learn our own lessons.
Pall Bearers will be Chris Caddell, Kelly Caddell, Michael Caddell, Corey Caddell, Hunter Patton, & Zane Patton.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday June 15th at O’Bannon Funeral Home with the Rev Joel Densman officiating. Burial will follow in the Fentress Community Cemetery.
