Matthews, father and mother Frank and Mata Matthews, sisters Inez Brown and Odessa Scheumack, brother Frank Matthews, and twin brother Melvin Matthews.

Milton and Shirley Matthews were married for many years and have four children. Milton grew up in post-depression Austin and learned the value of hard work at an early age. In his early life in East Austin, Milton held a number of odd jobs before starting a career at the Eli Witt Tobacco Company. Milton started as a dock worker and progressed through the ranks, served as a bookkeeper and ended his tenure as a merchandise buyer. Milton found his true calling working with Charles and Inez Brown as a Nursing Home Administrator. Milton excelled in this role and he and Shirley opened Austin’s Twin Oaks Nursing Home in 1969.

Milton was very active in the Texas Nursing home Association and served several years as the organization’s President. Later, Milton sold his share of Twin Oaks and opened North Lamar Nursing Home. Milton remained an active Nursing Home Administrator even after selling the North Lamar Nursing Home. In the mid-1980’s, Milton moved to Luling, Texas where he served as the Administrator of the Luling Care Center. Milton’s compassion for the elderly was well known in the industry, he served all as they were his own relatives. He truly loved those in his care; back in the 70’s his CB “handle” was the Caretaker. Milton loved working with the residents at Luling Care Center so much he actually retired three times from his Administrator’s position. Milton retired his final time in 2015.

After retirement, Milton remained active. He owned Plum Creek Mercantile in Luling with his friend Joyce Davis and continued to serve on the board of Directors of the Luling Oil Museum.

Although Milton was from Austin, Luling was his home. He was well respected in the Luling community and was loyal to his many dear friends throughout the community. Milton knew no strangers and was always eager to start-up a conversation with just about anyone. He could be seen at many of his favorite local restaurants.

Publicly, Milton was known for his dedication to his residents and staff, but to his family he was a loving and nurturing husband, dad, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He was a handyman and jack-of-all trades and loved genealogy. He successfully mapped many families to the late 1600’s. He loved to pencil sketch portraits and landscape scenes.

His strong faith and love of God was foundational in all he did. He was a mentor and role model to many throughout his life.
