Obituary for Richard Matthew Callihan Jr.

Richard Matthew Callihan was born February 11, 1938. He passed away peacefully on July 22, 2022, surrounded by family. Richard was many things to many people. To Karmen Callihan, he was “husband (hunny-bunny)” as of November 24, 1966. To Mark (LeAnn), Mike (Shanna), Milissa, Matt (Christi), and Sarah (Kayle Lewis), he was “Dad.” To twelve grandchildren, he was “Pa” and to eight, he was a great grandfather. To very many, he was surrogate father, mentor, teacher and friend.
Richard graduated from Luling High School in 1956. He started his work life as a well logger in the oilfield. He was a brick mason for many years. For 37 years, he worked in law enforcement. After his father died in 1981, he became a policeman for the Luling Police Department. He was at that job for 25 years and retired from the police department as assistant chief to run for Caldwell County Constable. He worked at that job for twelve years. He ended his peace officer career as a Caldwell County Sheriff’s Deputy. He gave up work in 2018 to become a full-time hunter, fisherman, dance partner to Karmen, and cowboy. He was a cowboy his entire life, and it was the job he was loved the most and he was the best at. Cowboying was his way of life, his entire life, which he loved the most and he was the best at, following in his father’s boots.
As much as he loved to hunt, his favorite job was working with the cows and horses, which he did for 84 years, the thing he loved most was dancing with Karmen. Those that watched them dance knew there was no other couple like them. They were asked to lead the Grand March by friends and family and truly enjoyed showcasing their talent.

He taught his kids to ride, to shoot, to hunt, to fish, to dance and to have infinite patience. He carried on the same traditions with his grandchildren.
This is a very short version of a very full life.
