Obituary for Steven Clair Sledge

Steven Clair Sledge, 71, of Luling departed this life on Monday, March 18, 2024. Born to June and Lee Sledge on February 22, 1953, Steve was raised in Houston. Following graduation from South Houston High School in 1971, he attended Stephen F. Austin University, where he met the love of his life, Gail. They married in 1972, settled back in Houston and later the San Antonio area, where he completed a lifelong career in Telecommunications. The highlight of his career was his involvement in creating the telecom network at Johnson Space Center in support of the Space Shuttle Program. Steve retired to their home in Luling in 2002.

A sixth generation Texan, proud Mason, and member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, he had a passion for history. He was an avid gardener and devoted member of The United Methodist Church of Luling where he was a choir member and Trustee. He was a friend to all, loved sharing stories poolside and was a grilling aficionado. He loved his Houston Astros, their many horses, dogs and cats and had a knack for breaking golf clubs.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Gail, his loving wife of 52 years, son and daughter-in-law Mike & Leigh Ann Sledge and granddaughters Karley and Kamryn Sledge of Dripping Springs, niece and nephew Karla McCall of Granite Falls, North Carolina and Derrick Chalfant of Newton, North Carolina, numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, uncles, cousins and friends. He was an integral part of so many lives and will be deeply missed.

Services will be held Monday, March 25th at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church of Luling, followed by a Celebration of Life luncheon at Zedler Mill in Luling. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the First United Methodist Church of Luling.
